Making my work often feels a bit like falling off a cliff. Over time and practice, I have learned I will eventually land, though usually not where I thought I would.
I start with what is on my mind – a phrase, thoughts about the state of the world or my world and try to figure out a way to abstractly express those ideas. My process becomes a call and response approach to putting something down to react to. There is a continual internal conversation that happens while I am working on a piece. I go back to the original idea to see if this is where the work is going or if it has moved in another more interesting direction.
I have come to trust (mostly) creative play and I am comfortable not knowing the answer when I begin a work. Allowing the process to help me discover what the work will become is much more interesting to me. Things that influence me and that are constants in what I think about are:
- Organization/structure/color organization/pattern
- Materials and their potential to evoke ideas
- Watching my mind/meditation practice
- The natural world/seasons/gardening
- Human nature
I am particularly interested in human awkwardness-the vulnerable, silly, frustrated, sincere but unpolished, honest aspects of human nature and human interactions. I want this to come through in my work and to be a reflection of our/my imperfect attempts to communicate and be in the world. Marilyn Jolly
